  Communications Manager Position

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing innovative communications programs that will raise Philadelphia’s profile as a meeting, convention and sporting event destination. Working closely with, and reporting to, the Director of Communications, this position guides domestic media relations strategies for the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB). This role will focus on developing and maintaining relations with travel trade publications and writers covering the tourism industry, and will serve as the primary contact for local Philadelphia press. Working in partnership with the International Communications Manager, this position is responsible for the development and execution of the organization’s domestic public relations plan, which combined with the organizational content and social media plans will formulate the overall PHLCVB communications plan. The position is high-paced, works closely with internal departments and many external partners, including the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association, PHLCVB members and others. This role will also serve as a project lead on communications projects for each of the PHLCVB’s business development divisions.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

 

Media Relations:

  • Lead domestic public relations strategies and serve as the primary media relations resource for local Philadelphia press covering tourism and hospitality as well as for national domestic convention and travel trade press.
  • Promote the work of the PHLCVB to media in local, trade and national outlets to enhance the organization’s position and relevancy.
  • Manage the domestic press release process, including both writing and distributing all press releases/media advisories or managing process with contracted external public relations firm.
  • Maintain and grow the media database for conventions and meetings, sports, diversity and life sciences markets.
  • Monitor and engage with outlets (convention trade, blogs, etc) that are important within the meetings and convention industry.
  • Lead the domestic visiting journalist program, identifying opportunities to host top tier tourism industry press and coordinate all domestic press FAM itineraries and travel arrangements.
  • Stay abreast of trends and news in the meeting, convention, life sciences and sporting events markets.

 

Communications Strategy and Planning:

  • Develop and maintain the domestic PR calendar and coordinate with international press strategies as needed and when appropriate.
  • Work with the PHLCVB’s three business development divisions (PHL Sports, PHL Life Sciences and PHL Diversity) to develop and implement communications plans and strategies that raise Philadelphia’s profile as a life sciences hub, a national and international sporting event destination and a center for multicultural and diverse events and initiatives.
  • Work with the Convention Services team to support the needs of the PHLCVB’s meeting and convention customers. Serve as media relations consultant for all major, citywide conventions and events booked by the PHLCVB and held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, area facilities and hotels -- helping to maximize each events’ exposure in Philadelphia.
  • Manage public relations vendor relationships, including serving as the primary liaison to the PHLCVB’s public relations agency.
  • Monitor and report on press activity, provide monthly reports and insights to internal PHLCVB teams as well as to key external partners.
  • Collaborate with the PHLCVB marketing team to develop public relations campaigns to complement paid advertising strategies in target markets.

 

External Affairs Support:

  • Work closely with the Director of Communications and Chief Administration Officer to develop and execute communications strategies that support External Affairs programing and key tactics.
  • Assist in crafting talking points for PHLCVB President & CEO and other key leadership, which can include presentation development, speechwriting and/or interview prep.
  •   Develop, write and edit newsletters for various internal clients, external electronic communications as they relate to meetings and conventions, and all PHLCVB-led special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive knowledge of Philadelphia; experience in the tourism/hospitality industry strongly preferred.
  • Experience identifying and proactively developing story ideas for media.
  • Respected relationships with key media; demonstrated success in pitching local, trade and national media.
  • Experience tracking, monitoring and evaluating earned media. Experience using IQ Media tracking software a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills. Editing skills a must.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have knowledge of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software (MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Expert knowledge of PowerPoint required.

 

Experience Requirements

 

Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university required; four or more years related work experience.
